A Sustainable Solution for Food Security in Cities

Abstract

Objective – To analyze urban and family farming as sustainable practices that promote food security, social inclusion, and sustainable development in urban and rural contexts.

Methodology – Qualitative and exploratory research based on bibliographic and documentary analysis, using data from FAO, IBGE, and CAISAN, addressing the integration of sustainability, public policies, and agriculture in urban spaces.

Originality/Relevance The study fills a theoretical gap concerning the relationship between urban agriculture, sustainability, and territorial planning, contributing to academic discussions on sustainable cities.

Results – Urban and family farming strengthen food security, reuse underutilized spaces, reduce dependence on long supply chains, and generate environmental, social, and economic benefits.

Theoretical/Methodological Contributions – Proposes urban agriculture as a multidimensional practice integrating architecture, urbanism, and sustainability within a unified field of action.

Social and Environmental Contributions – Strengthens community bonds, promotes inclusion and food sovereignty, and contributes to mitigating environmental impacts in cities.
