Abstract

Objective – This article aims to address the processes of rainwater harvesting and reuse with an emphasis on sustainability, highlighting its importance in the context of potable water scarcity. It seeks to demonstrate rainwater use as a viable alternative for reducing treated water consumption and strengthening environmental sanitation.

Methodology – The research was developed through an exploratory bibliographic review, based on secondary sources of information. Studies dealing with water sustainability and rainwater reuse practices were consulted, focusing on both urban and rural applications.

Originality/relevance – The study is part of the contemporary debate on tackling the water crisis, bringing as a differential the emphasis on accessible and sustainable solutions for rainwater harvesting. Its academic and practical relevance lies in raising awareness about the environmental and social responsibility associated with conscious water consumption, while encouraging economically viable alternatives for families and communities.

Results – The analysis indicates that rainwater harvesting directly contributes to the sustainability of environmental sanitation systems, supports the conservation of groundwater, and promotes the proper maintenance of urban and rural drainage. In addition, it demonstrates the effectiveness of basic harvesting systems as strategies for saving potable water.

Theoretical/methodological contributions – The study broadens knowledge on rainwater reuse practices, providing technical and conceptual foundations that may support public policies, sanitation projects, and future research. It also reinforces the pertinence of exploratory methods in investigating sustainable alternatives for water management.

Social and environmental contributions – The research shows that rainwater reuse generates environmental benefits, such as the preservation of water resources, and social benefits, such as cost reduction for families and communities. By raising awareness about responsible potable water consumption, the study contributes to building a culture of sustainability and ensuring a more balanced future for water supply in society.
