The use of plastic became popular in the early 20th century, with a significant increase in its production and disposal starting in the 1990s, especially in packaging. Currently, only 24% of post-consumer plastic is recycled in Brazil, most of which is disposed of inappropriately. Globally, approximately 359 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually. Recycling, although recognized, still faces challenges and requires urgent political action. This article investigates the reuse of plastic in the manufacture of ecological furniture, exploring circular economy alternatives and partnerships with local waste pickers, who are fundamental in the collection and recycling process. The method used was a literature review, addressing topics such as plastic characterization, recycling technologies, and the importance of waste picker cooperatives. The furniture proposal involves the manufacture of panels from recycled plastic, heated and pressed, creating pieces with a contemporary design that add value to discarded materials. In addition to reducing environmental impact, recycling 1 ton of plastic generates jobs for waste pickers, also promoting social development. The article concludes that the use of recycled plastic in furniture design is viable and relevant, but still little explored in the Brazilian market. The research highlights the importance of encouraging public-private partnerships and promoting the training of collectors to optimize waste management and foster the circular economy in the sector.
