Objective – To understand the formative process of the municipality of Acorizal (MT), analyzing the dynamics of land occupation, urban development, and cultural preservation, with emphasis on traditional manifestations and their influence on local development.
Methodology – The research adopted a descriptive approach, based on field surveys for analyzing land use, infrastructure, and socioeconomic conditions; bibliographic and documental review of cultural manifestations; use of georeferencing tools (QGIS) for territorial mapping; and analysis of normative documents, such as master plans and municipal legislation.
Originality/Relevance – The study contributes by addressing the integration of cultural heritage and urban development in a little-explored context — small municipalities in Mato Grosso — highlighting tensions between urban growth, cultural preservation, and infrastructure, aspects still scarcely treated in academic literature on territorial planning in the Amazon region.
Results – The municipality shows a strong cultural identity, especially through traditional expressions (siriri, cururu, São Pedro Festival). On the other hand, it faces challenges related to urban infrastructure, sanitation, unplanned demographic growth, and socio-environmental problems. Family farming and livestock have significant economic potential but lack policies for diversification and productive valorization.
Theoretical/Methodological Contributions – The study emphasizes the importance of integrated analysis between culture, territory, and public policies, proposing the articulation of urban planning and cultural appreciation as a strategy for sustainable local development. It also highlights the use of geoprocessing as a supporting tool for territorial analyses in small municipalities.
Social and Environmental Contributions – The findings highlight the urgent need for public policies aimed at improving urban infrastructure, solid waste management, basic sanitation, and land use planning, promoting quality of life, environmental preservation, and cultural heritage appreciation, essential for Acorizal’s balanced development.
