The lack of basic sanitation - and its impact on health - is a reality that affects a significant portion of the Brazilian population. However, this inequality does not affect everyone in the same way; there is a specific racial profile of the most vulnerable people impacted by precarious environmental conditions. Although it is a social problem, this issue has been underestimated as a sociological problem. Therefore, based on an exploratory literature review and analysis of data on access to sanitation and morbidity/mortality from diseases related to inadequate sanitation, by color/race, the aim was to racialize the discussion on sanitation and environmental health from a political-historical perspective. It was found that, since Colonial Brazil, the black population has experienced a continuous history of lack of access to sanitation services, with consequent negative impacts on the environmental health of this population. As a result, every hour and a half, a black person dies in Brazil due to inadequate access to sanitation, a situation that is the result of the relationship between the state, institutional racism, and environmental racism, contributing to the genocide of the Brazilian black population. It is urgent, therefore, that this issue be included in political and research agendas.
