In recent years, failures in the management of railway heritage complexes in cities in the State of São Paulo, especially those that are unused in non-operational areas, have aggravated urban problems of conservation, abandonment, insecurity and compromised quality of life in the cities in question. In this case, the lack of a cohesive urban public policy among the stakeholders involved highlights the lack of commitment to the sustainable use of heritage assets, in combating physical degradation and in ways of protecting the built and natural landscape. This research aims to identify the problems and potential of railway architectural complexes in the city of Bauru (SP), based on the mapping of structures most susceptible to environmental-urban impacts, in order to gather subsidies for heritage management and sustainability requirements. The work is incorporated into the project of the “Railway Memory” Group (Unesp), which operates in the State of São Paulo, with analyses of railway sections in the state of São Paulo, in the identification, mapping and characterization for architectural analysis, with a view to assisting in interventions, urban territorial planning and public policies. The research seeks to improve the scientific debate regarding the production of instruments for the evaluation and reuse of obsolete railway sets, with a view to promoting urban requalification, habitability in the socioeconomic context, preservation of railway heritage and sustainability.
