Objective – To analyze how symbolic accessibility and the appropriation process of the Parque dos Poderes in Campo Grande (MS) are configured, observing what the appropriations of space are based on the uses and perceptions of individuals.
Methodology – The research adopted a qualitative, exploratory, and interpretative approach, based on authors such as Lefebvre (2001), Bourdieu (1989), and Zukin (1995), combining a literature review, analysis of projects and legislation, and an online questionnaire to capture perceptions about symbolic accessibility and appropriation of the Parque dos Poderes.
Originality/Relevance – The research object identifies the lack of understanding of how symbolic accessibility and the appropriation of institutional spaces, such as the Parque dos Poderes, influence the dynamics of belonging, use, and social exclusion in contemporary cities. The study contributes to broadening the understanding of the symbolic and social disputes in these hybrid spaces, highlighting the importance of urban planning and public policies in promoting more democratic and inclusive spaces in growing and fragmented cities like Campo Grande.
Results – The study shows that Parque dos Poderes serves as a space for coexistence and well-being, democratizing access to leisure and contact with nature. However, the power struggle manifests itself in the way the space is appropriated for different uses, generating tensions and symbolic conflicts among visitors. Because it was spontaneously occupied by the population, the park lacks adequate physical infrastructure.
Theoretical/Methodological Contributions – The research contributes to a broader understanding of the symbolic and social disputes in these hybrid spaces, highlighting the importance of urban planning and public policies in promoting more democratic and inclusive spaces in growing and fragmented cities like Campo Grande.
Social and Environmental Contributions – Parque dos Poderes is an example of spontaneous appropriation of space, being perceived as a socio-environmental heritage of Campo Grande. However, its full potential depends on investments in infrastructure, accessibility, and security.
