Objective – To demonstrate how the practice of inventory, carried out in an academic environment, contributes to pedagogical training, the appreciation of built heritage, and the understanding of urban dynamics, establishing itself as a strategic tool to guide public policies and strengthen collective memory.
Methodology – The heritage inventory was adopted as a methodological and strategic tool, articulating teaching and research in the Architecture and Urbanism course at IFF, with the participation of scholarship students and a spatial focus corresponding to the Commercial Zone of the Historic Center of Campos dos Goytacazes (ZCH), delimited by the 2008 Urban Master Plan.
Originality/Relevance –The study addresses the theoretical gap that restricts inventory to its technical and normative dimension, exploring it as a pedagogical practice and an integrative instrument of teaching and research, with the potential to support local public preservation policies.
Results – Information was systematized on the uses, typologies, and conservation status of the built heritage in the central area; technical records and an accessible database were produced; and the digital project “Patrimônio Goitacá” was created, expanding dissemination and heritage education.
Theoretical/Methodological Contributions – The work reaffirms inventory as a critical and interdisciplinary practice, proposing a flexible and replicable methodology that combines technical criteria with ethical and civic education, broadening the academic debate on its role as a foundation for public policies.
Social and Environmental Contributions – The research strengthens cultural identity and the collective memory of Campos, democratizing access to heritage information and encouraging sustainable practices of reuse and rehabilitation, positioning inventory as a tool for community engagement and responsible urban development.
