Abstract

The present study deals with the memories of the construction of the Banguê Dam as a determinant in the civilizing production of the history of Assaré, linked to the protagonism of the black population of the place. The research aims to study the use of African-based techniques and technologies in the formation of cities belonging to Cariri Ceará. The Banguê Dam, an artificial water reservoir built in the mid-19th century, using the work of enslaved labor, but which was recognized in the history of the place as being created by the colonizer. To carry out the research, the methodology of Afro-descendants was used, associated with oral history with the use of narrative interviews with residents who had knowledge about the formation of the Alto de Banguê neighborhood. Given the ideologies imposed by Eurocentrism in the framework of the origin of cities in the interior of Ceará, there is a lack of knowledge in identifying Afro-descendant belonging in the production of cities. In this way, our interest in presenting possibilities for developing geography teaching, using the spatialities of the place in the production of the territory linked to the local slave past, positive the belonging of the black population at the origin of the municipality.
