Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objective – The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of drastic pruning on the capacity of trees to promote thermal comfort in urban environments.

Methodology – Data collection on surface temperatures in full sun and in shade using a thermometer with laser sighting.

Originality/Relevance – The study is relevant due to the identification of the most appropriate management of trees to mitigate extreme temperatures in urban areas and due to the simplified method of collection and analysis.

Results – The study proved that the tree species oiti mitigates temperatures by approximately 9°C in a situation of conduction pruning, on urban public roads and that this potential is reduced when drastic pruning occurs.

Theoretical/Methodological Contributions – The study demonstrated that the oiti tree reduces its capacity to promote thermal comfort in the urban environment when subjected to drastic pruning.

Social and Environmental Contributions – The study provides useful guidelines for application in municipal master plans and urban afforestation, with the purpose of guaranteeing thermal comfort for the population.
