Objective – This article aims to analyze the open river spaces of Barra Bonita and Igaraçu do Tietê, discussing how these spaces, although located on the banks of the same river, present contrasting dynamics of use and appropriation, and can be understood as part of a system of open spaces.
Methodology – The research adopts a qualitative approach, based on a literature review on landscape, and open space systems, combined with field observations, photographic records, and a comparative analysis of the physical, social, and urban characteristics of each open space.
Originality/Relevance – The study contributes by filling a gap in the analysis of river open spaces in the interior of São Paulo state, highlighting the role of small beaches as mediators between city and river, a role that has been little explored in academic debates on leisure and urban landscape.
Results – The results demonstrate that the Barra Bonita open space is consolidating itself as a regional tourist space, linked to navigation and the flow of visitors, while the Igaraçu do Tietê small beach maintains a communal and everyday character, focused on local leisure. These differences reflect distinct forms of urban appropriation and management.
Theoretical/methodological contributions – The article reinforces the relevance of the open space systems approach to understanding river areas, highlighting how a comparative analysis of uses and social practices broadens the understanding of the landscape.
Social and environmental contributions – The study highlights the importance of public policies that integrate open spaces into regional leisure networks, promoting both the appreciation of community identity and the strengthening of the cities' relationship with the river, contributing to environmental preservation and the recognition of the Tietê River as a landscape and cultural heritage site.
