Abstract

Objective – To demonstrate how the rain garden solution can meet the community’s demands and address various problems of the land regularization project at low cost and in a simple and fast way, while simultaneously enhancing other uses.

Methodology – The Laboratório Periférico works based on the community’s demands, with which it develops solutions through an action-research approach, aiming to enrich the project through lived experiences and both popular and technical knowledge. The methodologies of water-sensitive urban design and analysis of the dimensions of urban sustainability are applied.

Originality/Relevance – This study seeks to introduce Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and Water-Sensitive Urban Design into the land regularization project, aiming for greater efficiency in sanitation infrastructures and more comfort in the context of climate change.

Results – In the land regularization project, problems of drainage, runoff, stormwater treatment, lack of vegetation, and mobility can be solved with rain gardens along the streets, which follow specific criteria to be integrated into the pre-existing urban fabric.

Theoretical/Methodological Contributions – The study provides criteria, methodology, and tools for the design of rain gardens in the urban planning project for the land regularization of informal settlements.

Social and Environmental Contributions – Rain gardens help treat stormwater, improve air quality, sequester heavy metals, reduce surface runoff velocity, and increase local biodiversity, while also enhancing food cultivation and neighborhood interaction.
