Weaknesses in the Operation of the Sewage System of the 5 de Abril Centrality in Moçâmedes, Namibe (Angola)

Abstract

This work aims to propose actions supported by the basic sanitation standards that allow the mitigation of the insufficiencies existing in the sewage system in the houses of Centralidade 5 de Abril in Moçâmedes (Angola), based on documentary analysis and scientific observation. Four experts and 155 residents participated in the research, and the results of the qualitative material of the surveys were systematized and analyzed with the aid of descriptive and percentage statistics. It was found the existence of bad odors in the bathrooms and kitchen caused by the lack of ventilation and grease boxes in the domestic sewer, clogging drains and poor connection and sealing of the pipes, as a result of living with the bad smell the residents feel bad -being, the urge to vomit and difficulties in breathing, in order to mitigate the smells, the residents leave the windows permanently open and open the lids of the visiting boxes. Interventions such as siphon replacement, cleaning of visiting boxes and the implementation of ventilation pipes resulted in significant system improvements.
